What Not to Do When Wearing Pearls (And Why It Matters)
Share
Pearls might look delicate and that’s because they are. Unlike harder gemstones, pearls are organic and far more sensitive to the elements around them. The way you wear them plays a huge role in how well they age. Whether it’s your favourite pearl necklace or a pair of go-to earrings, here’s what not to do when wearing pearls — and why it matters.
Don’t apply perfume, lotion or hairspray after putting them on
Pearls are porous, which means they can absorb chemicals from beauty products. Always follow the “last on, first off” rule: your pearls should be the finishing touch to your look, never the first. Apply any skincare, fragrance or styling products before your jewellery.
Don’t wear them in the shower, gym, or bed
Pearls don’t love moisture, heat or pressure. Shower steam and sweat can dull their surface, while tossing and turning in your sleep risks scratching them or weakening the string of a necklace. It’s best to remove pearl jewellery before physical activity or bedtime.
Don’t store them with other jewellery
Tossing pearls in with chunky chains or gem-set rings can lead to scratches and scuffs. Always store them separately in a soft pouch or fabric-lined box.
Don’t clean them with harsh solutions
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, polishing cloths meant for metals, or even regular soap. Stick to a soft, slightly damp cloth after wear and a very mild cleaning method only when necessary.
Don’t forget to wear them!
Pearls benefit from the natural oils in your skin, which help keep their glow. Just wear them mindfully, and they’ll reward you with lasting beauty.
Pearls are special — and they like to be treated that way. A little extra care in how you wear them goes a long way in keeping them luminous for years to come.
