Can You Shower in Your Jewellery? Here’s What You Need to Know
Share
We get it — when you’ve found a piece you love, it’s tempting to never take it off. But when it comes to wearing jewellery in the shower, not all pieces are created equal. Here’s what you need to know before hopping in with your favourite necklace, ring or pair of pearl earrings.
Pearls and water don’t mix
Pearls are porous and delicate. Showering in them can cause them to absorb water and soap, leading to dullness and damage over time. Moisture can also weaken the silk threads used in many pearl necklaces, making them more prone to breakage.
Gold vermeil and water: proceed with caution
While vermeil has a base of sterling silver, its gold plating can wear down over time — especially with repeated water exposure. Occasional splashes are fine, but regular showering can cause fading and discolouration.
Soap, shampoo and conditioner can do damage
It’s not just the water. Most body products contain chemicals that can leave a film or residue on jewellery, dulling its finish or even corroding certain metals. Pearls are especially sensitive to anything acidic or alcohol-based.
It’s not just about the materials — it’s about longevity
Even if your jewellery can technically handle water, that doesn’t mean it should. Taking it off before showering extends its life, keeps it sparkling, and avoids the dreaded soap scum build-up.
Quick tip: Keep a dish or pouch near the sink or shower
If you find yourself forgetting, keep a soft pouch or trinket dish nearby as a visual reminder to remove your jewellery before stepping into the water.
When in doubt, take it off. Showering in jewellery might seem harmless, but it can wear down your pieces faster than you think — especially if they include pearls. A little care now means you’ll get to wear them for many years to come.
